2023 Bennett Memorial Scholarship Recipient

We are delighted to announce the recipient of the inaugural Ricky Allen Bennett, Sr. Memorial Scholarship.  After careful consideration and review of numerous exceptional applications, we are pleased to award Ronald L Hester, Jr “RJ” with this scholarship.

A graduate of East Columbus High School, RJ has demonstrated outstanding academic achievements, remarkable leadership skills and a strong commitment to his community.  His strong work ethic, scholastic achievements and dedication to personal growth truly impressed our selection committee.  Graduating #11 in his class with a weighted 4.125 GPA, it’s a privilege to support this First Generational College student.  With this $2500 scholarship, he will further his educational pursuit at UNC-Greensboro in Technology. 

Like Ricky Bennett, Sr, “RJ” was a standout athlete, in basketball, football and track & field.  A member of the National Honor Society, Vice President of the Senior Class, Command Sgt Major with the JROTC and played Ben – Prince to King in the school drama production.  Hester is a member of New Light Missionary Baptist Church in Hallsboro, NC, serving as the Jr Superintendent of Sunday School, Usher, Youth Choir and Bible Quiz Bowl member.  

Having a heart of service was important to the selection committee.  RJ has volunteered to do yard work for neighbors and was integral in a drive to donate clothes and toys to needy community members all while working at Food Lion during his Junior and Senior year. He is the son of Ronald Hester, Sr and Regina Hester.
